GRIH is one of the most recent websites and logos I have designed. I have a special place in my heart for projects where I get to design the logo/identity as well as the website. I don’t always post web projects here, but in this case the client gave me complete freedom and I think we were both pleased with the result.

Thought an old viewmaster style icon would be neat for my new portfolio viewer page. Created this guy in illustrator and used a scan of the reel. I have to give Tim credit for the blinking idea, which evolved into winking.

PNG vs GIF, the smackdown

Binky bear The topic of PNG or Portable Network Graphics, pronounced “ping,” has come up a few times lately, designers are afraid to use them because we’re clinging to GIFs like a beat up old teddybear from our childhood. Turns out, PNG compresses to a smaller size when compared to a GIF with same number of indexed colors, in addition to supporting varying alpha levels (degrees of transparency). According to fellow designerd Micah Nolte, they don’t quite render the same across all of the browsers. This is contrary to what I’ve read, but perhaps that’s all just a big conspiracy to rid the world of animated GIF abuse. To be continued…
